Hospital del Niño de Puerto Rico
History
In the year 1924, under the leadership of Dr. José Rodríguez Pastor, a group of dedicated citizens, created the "Society", to work in the prevention of tuberculosis. They joined forces to extend help and provide treatment to those affected by this disease, which had reached epidemic proportions in Puerto Rico, at that time.
Hospital facilities were built to be able to provide full services to patients. Later, the building was rehabilitated to provide treatment for children with bone and glandular tuberculosis.
In 1939, the "Society" expanded its services and treatment to provide in-house care to children who required long term hospitalization to convalesce, and for pre and post surgery cases.
Later, during the polio epidemic that hit Puerto Rico in the forties, human resources and medical equipment were added to assist post acute polio cases, and other conditions. At that time, the "Society" changed its name to "The Orthopedic Institute". In 1964, the name was changed again to "Hospital del Niño de Puerto Rico".
Organization's overall mission and goals:
Our mission is to contribute to the rehabilitation of children with physical and/or mental disabilities.
The vision is to continue expanding services, focused on the disable child's rehabilitation and integration to the society.
Our main objective is to protect the patient health and well-being. To this effect, the activities are designed, but not limited, to develop, maintain and provide quality health care for children that suffer chronic and sever physical and/or mental disabilities.
